The announcement of the Original Star Wars Trilogy on DVD has elicited many reactions. It is news about the technical specs of this release that have fans the most up in arms.

In a story from The Digital Bits, it appears that the new DVDs of the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return Of The Jedi are going to be released in the "non-anamorphic" format. These widescreen titles will be letterboxed only.

The thinking is that these "new" DVDs will simply be the "non-anamorphic" versions that appeared on VHS and Laserdisc.

Also, USA Today has some interesting insights on the DVD release. The main one coming from Lucasfilm's Jim Ward who had this to say about the "new " DVDs "video quality":

"It is state of the art, as of 1993, and that's not as good as state of the art 2006."
