The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King: According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King has shattered the records with its opening box office take. In the 5 days since it opened, the third film in the epic trilogy has taken in over $246 million worldwide. Domestically, the fantasy pic brought home nearly $75 million over the weekend and over $125 million since it opened 5 days ago.
The combined grosses for Peter Jackson's latest bests the previous champ, The Matrix Revolutions, which took in a worldwide $203 million in its first 5 days. Additionally, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King sets the record for the biggest December opening, topping The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and the highest grossing 5 days ever, topping Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace.
While there were other films in theaters this week, they managed fairly pedestrian showings with Mona Lisa Smile landing in 2nd place taking in about $12 million and Something's Gotta Give managing to also rake in nearly $12 million for a respectable third place finish. In 4th place, The Last Samurai and, rounding out the top 5, Stuck On You.
