According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount Pictures' War of the Worlds earned $77.1 million over the four-day holiday period and $112.8 million since the aliens invaded the big screen Wednesday. Opening in 3,908 theaters, the sci-fi drama, co-produced with DreamWorks Pictures, was the second-biggest opening for the Fourth of July weekend, behind last year's $115.8 million in four days for Sony's Spider-Man 2. War, based on the 1898 H.G. Wells novel, also marked the second-largest opening for Spielberg, after the prolific director's 1997 film The Lost World: Jurassic Park, which earned $90.2 million over the Memorial Day weekend frame. For Cruise and Paramount, the PG-13 film marked an overall best, surpassing the $70.8 million opening for Mission: Impossible 2 during the Memorial Day holiday in 2000. War surpassed $100 million in five days -- a best for Cruise, Spielberg and Paramount.
