An interesting article has been written by The Hollywood Reporter about how Bryan Singer was initially attached to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, but was offered a better deal from Warner Bros. to direct Superman Returns. X3 has since outperformed Superman Returns at the box-office and that aspect is incorporated into thier story.
