STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS (2008)

"Shall we continue..."

As some of you may know, I created quite a stir in the threads about this film. I just saw it and now I'm going to review it. Have fun guys.

The Clone Wars is like an intriguing Saturday morning cartoon show, then again, this film was a promotion/premier for the 30 episode TV series that will be coming out this fall. This will be a new challenge for me. I will rate this as both a film and a TV show, though I have never done a review for the latter.

As a filmed presentation, it started quirky at best, with highly enthusiastic narration, rather than a scrolling introduction that a Star Wars fan would expect. The dialog was good is some parts, others not, though I was surprised to see that Samuel L. Jackson, Anthony Daniels, and Christoper Lee actually contributed their voices to their characters in this animated version. All the voices sounded much like the original actors, with the exception of padme (whose role is teeny tiny).

The animation, not as terrible as I imagined. If anything, I was surprised that this film had a PG rating. I lost track of the body count in the first 10 minutes. It was also funnier than I imagined. Some of the comments that the infantry droids said should have been used in the live action films. That was great.

As a film, it's not one you would want to see a second time, but as a TV show, it was actually pretty good. Tons of fighting, explosions, a new character with an underhand saber fighting style. Yeah...it works for TV.

The most impressive thing about this film was how the scene transitions were much like the live action films. John Williams score was not here of course, but it was engaging, and it never repeated itself, unlike what all TV cartoon shows do. Granted, it ended inconclusively. Like "there's gotta be more than that!" well...I guess we'll see more of it on the small screen.

Shall we continue...? I think so. In a nutshell, if you go this with the mindset of watching a spiffy TV cartoon show, you won't be disappointed. A lot of bad reviews have come to this film because it was graded "as a film". Can't really blame them...but it's a heck of a lot better than those Pokemon movies...wow! Or Batman, Mask of the Phantasm...well...about equal to that one.

3 stars as a Film, 4.5 stars as a TV show.

The true Star Wars enthusiasts will get a kick out of this installment, but don't expect to be wowed like the live action films. Expect something on the level of Super Friends or Thundercats. This will be the best animated series to come to TV in many years...but let's not push another theater release.

Hmm...you have a point ComicBookFan.

I did list some characters, but not enough I suppose. Didn't think these were questions needing answers.

About Assaj Ventress. She's alright, though she was just THERE. Meaning, her character was never developed. Everyone knew who she was already. Also, Anikin was already a Jedi Knight...no padawan right of passage or anything. In those cases I was disappointed.

I own all the animated Batman too, btw :)

Hey man, Batman: Mask of The Phantasm was actually pretty good. So was SubZero. I own all the Batman animated stuff. But anyways...

I was hoping you would list some characters. Oh well, hopefully someone has read the books as I'm interested in knowing if it follows them. Assaj Ventress is like my favorite character. Was she done justice? How was the story? Your review didn't answer these questions or even come close to addressing them. But thanks for playing. You get a red star.

I'm sorry you're not going to read my review rad :(. The 4 stars was an average just so you know. I gave it a 3 as a cinematic experience, and that was pretty generous.

I mean the style he chose compares badly, live action and CGI to cartoon. Perhaps it's my age, but cartoons don't really do it for me anymore. I can't really comment on the content yet. I keep hoping for news of a KOTOR film though. However, as far as I know, Lucas didn't have any input in it's production, so probably doesn't regard it as canon.

I can see where you're coming from. From my viewpoint, he (Lucas) put this up for a cinematic release. So my preconception of this is based from that. When compared to the live action films, I just think this compares badly, and almost seems like an afterthought. I will probably end up watching this at some point, just not at the cinema. Nicely written review btw.

I'm not one to argue on comments for my reviews, just so you know :)

Reason being is that I've seen it, judged it, reviewed it, and am therefore cleared of prejudice. I just hate it when people say something "is" horrible/good before anyone has a chance to judge it for themselves. "is" is a defining word that can be used to press their opinions on others. If someone said "I think this is/my opinion is"...I wouldn't have anything to say.

Thanks for the comment Saquin. I liked it for its TV potential, not for its cinematic ventures, just to clarify. 3 stars from me is VERY generous if it's not great. I have not written my Hancock review yet, and that was a 2.5 for my books.

Your last comment sums up how I felt about this in the first place. Sure, it may be entertaining, but as a cinema release? It's just not what a SW film should look like for cinema. I don't want another argument btw, I DO respect your view. I just don't agree with it. Saying that, I'm glad you liked it.
