"Through a Voorhees was he born... through a Voorhees may he be reborn... and only by the hands of a Voorhees will he die."
Well let me begin this review by just saying that this series has always been one of my favorites, and so no matter how stupid they seem to get, I still for some reason love to watch Jason go around and just kill random people. This was not one of the bests, but I liked it nonetheless. It is the telling of the origins of Jason's seemingly endless reign of terror, and gets at the mystery of why he refuses to die.
The storyline, though a little stupid is one to appreciate for it's originality. It basically brings Jason back as always, only this time it tells why he cannot die, and why it is that he is the way he is, what drives him and such. It's very unique, and although they could've done much better with it, I really enjoyed how it twisted and turned around different things. I like how the ending of this one also sort of set up the way to make Freddy Vs. Jason. Watch this to see what I mean. One thing I thought was cool about this movie, was the opening scene, where the FBI track him down and blow him to bits. It's just cool to finally see the whole world organize to fight him.
Visuals in this movie are actually very interesting to see. Like the newest face of Jason, which seems to vary with each movie, it's very grotesque, but it's also very cool, and it also shows the years of decay that his undead corpse has been enduring throughout this entire series. I also liked the graphics of the worm demon thing, and how it took over people to get to it's destination. Even though they were a little weird to see, the visuals of this movie were pretty intense.
The directing of this movie was done by Adam Marcus who has not brought us many movies as of yet, this being his first. Though this movie was so hokey, it was a rather good one, and I give the director a cheer for bringing his own visions to this epic and faltering series of slasher flicks.
Kane Hodder plays our friend Jason Voorhees in this one, and as many people have pointed out, he may not talk, but he still is one of the best Jasons. Jason was blown to bits by an FBI task force at the beginning of this movie, and when his remains were sent to a morgue, the mortician becomes enrapt with the beating black heart of Jason Voorhees, and soon he begins to devour the heart. This sends Jason's spirit through the mortician who passes it on constantly so that Jason can get to another Voorhees so that he may be reborn. Naturally the character of Jason in this one has really developed to have a new purpose, and this must take a great deal of skill to get down, and Kane Hodder does it incredibly well, even though this movie wasn't that great. His body language and movement, and his skills with the machete, as well as the slight cocks of his head at things he can't believe do all the talking for this being that he cannot do himself. I imagine such a role as this must've taken much time to get together and I think he did really well with it.
The bounty hunter, Creighton Duke, who relays the grisly details of the Voorhees secret to the family, so that they know that they are the only ones who can stop Jason is played by Steven Williams. Steven Williams is a veteran of many movies, and in this one he gives us a thrilling yet slightly corny performance. I really enjoyed his character, and the characters drive to stop Jason was done well by Steven Williams.
Diana Kimble is played by Erin Grey. Diana Kimble is Jason's half sister, so naturally she is one of the family members that Jason goes after to try and resurrect himself. Though Diana's character isn't really in this movie for that much, her acting is relatively good, and the character was actually halfway believable.
The main target of Jason is Jessica Kimble, Diana's sister, and when her sister is killed by Jason, Jessica starts to flee. Jessica is played by Kari Keegan, who has not been in a lot of movies either. Jessica is the last grown up descendant, so Jason goes after her to transfer the worm to her, allowing him to be reborn, but Jason is not the only one that is after Jessica. The bounty hunter, Creighton Duke also locates her to give her the one weapon that can destroy Jason, a special dagger. He relates to her the story of Jason's lineage and the fact that he can only be reborn from a Voorhees, and can only be killed by a Voorhees. Her character in this one was very good at being scared, and the acting was also pretty good on Kari Keegan's part.
John D. LeMay plays Steven Freeman, Jessica's ex-lover, and the mother of her child, which she also tries to protect from Jason, due to the fact that it also is a descendant of the Voorhees family. Steven is driven at all costs to protect Jessica from Jason, and is constantly at her side helping her out. Throughout the movie he plays a distraction, as he tries to win Jessica back since their split. John D. LeMay does actually an excellent job at his acting, he's a veteran of Friday the 13th since he had a character for a few episodes of the television show also titled Friday the 13th, and his role was actually pretty convincing I thought.
All in all I'd say you should rent this movie and give it a try. I know that if you are a huge fan of the slasher flick genre, like I am, and if you are a big fan of Jason Voorhees, also like I am, then you will most likely like this movies for the facts that it is a Jason Voorhees slasher film!!!!!
