"Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She has no children, only dolls. If you see her in your dreams, be sure you never, ever scream."
Well, I didn't want to see this in the theater, because I was too scared (that was back when I was younger than I am now). So I was looking forward to it on DVD, and to tell the truth; I was disappointed. But then a good friend, BlizZzard liked it, and then I remembered the movie, and didn't remember why I didn't like it. So in order to figure it out, I rented it again. THIS time I loved the movie. I actually plan to buy it.
The story is one I find quite interesting, and... creepy. I have never been one to be afraid of dolls... until now. At the beginning of the movie, a doll arrives at a couples door one day. The man's wife is murdered while he was out, and comes back to find her dead. He now tries to investigate the murder himself, and proove himself innocent. Along the way we learn of Mary Shaw, who was murdered, and had her tongue ripped out. Now, if you ever see her, and IF you scream, you too will die by her, and she, hersef will tear out your tongue. Ok, so I thought the tongue part of the story they could have done without, and as I am explaining it to you, it may come off as cheesey. Well let me tell you, once you see the movie, your thoughts will change.
The director is James Wan. He brought us Saw, another great movie. This time he does another good film, but completely different. I love how the film is colored. It is almost like everyone looks dead already. Plus the lighting of the camera, and angles, and great death scenes. A very eerie feeling to the whole film from the moment it starts. I am glad I didn't see this in the theater. I wouldn't have slept well that night.
As I said, great visuals. The whole lighting of the film. Plus those freaky dolls were creepin' me out! And the way Mary Shaw looks is... disturbing, and enough to give anyone under 13 nightmares.
Overall, a truly creepy film. I don't know about terrifying. That is not the right word; more like... creepy. I recommend this film so that you can pop some popcorn, turn off all the lights, and get ready for one freaky movie! That's what I did, minus the popcorn.
