"Simply Enchanting"

Generally I go to a film with the impression that what I am about to see will not be very good, as not to hype myself up for disappointment. Based on previews and trailers for Enchanted, I was even more skeptical than usual, going to this film just to humor my wife. How wrong I was! This is truly the most original Disney live-action film I have seen in over a decade.

The film is loaded with theatrical moments that are commonplace in animated films, but is equaled by heavy doses of reality as these two worlds collide. Amy Adams and other actors portrayed as animated characters do not deviate from their fluid cartoon charisma as live actors, and the real world actors compliment their every move! While this story collaborates elements from Snow White, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, there is little else that this story is based on. Who would have thought that Disney was capable of making an original film, shedding their 10 year old snake skin of remakes and cliché reminiscences?

What could have been better was the visual effects. The evil dragon at the end looked like a cousin to Dragon Heart. While choreographed musical numbers are frowned upon in Hollywood these days, but commonplace in animated films, the audience was granted a short live action number that is actually permissible and finely executed, something I have not seen since Newsies. Never once did I look at my watch during the film, as I was fully captivated in every moment. If the film were entirely like the 5 minute animated opening, I would have gone stir-crazy, and you would have a completely different review.

While this may not be the greatest film of the year, in this critic's opinion, it has certainly found it's way into my top 3. Bravo to Disney. You have proven that you are capable of pulling yourself from the rut you've dug yourself into. Enchant us again.
